Opening plenary | How can healthcare advance the Sustainable Development Goals?

In September 2015 countries adopted the Sustainable Development Goals: Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in New York. The good news is that these goals are for all countries, both developed and developing countries, challenging all governments and their citizens to act in changing our world profoundly and responding to a number of challenges the world is facing. 17 goals have been defined, with Goal 3 promoting good health and well-being, Goal 11 for sustainable cities and communities, and Goal 13 around climate action. These all have a direct correlation to the work of the healthcare sector and offer opportunities for the sector in the future.

Framed around these SDGs, the opening plenary will look at how this high level policy can be practically implemented at regional and local level. We will be discussing what the role of the health sector could be or should be, how we can embrace the goals, incorporate their essence into our practice, and how we can advance the SDGs in healthcare.
